Glorieux Project
( A Project for Young Unemployed Women and Returnees)
The problem for project intervention
Unemployment is a widespread issue affecting most countries. The ability of youth to engage in productive activities has both social and economic consequences for an economy. In developing countries, youth face the challenge of obtaining not only productive employment but also safe and acceptable work.
According to the 2018 World Bank Enterprise Survey Ethiopia (WBESE), the urban unemployment rate in Ethiopia is 19.1%. The unemployment rate among women is 26.4%, which is more than double the rate among men (12.2%). Similarly, the unemployment rate among young women and men is 30.9% and 19.0%, respectively.
A recent study on youth self-employment in Ethiopia showed a similar pattern, with the unemployment rate among women in urban areas at 28.1%, almost twice that of men at 14.4%. The study also revealed that the disparity increases as people grow older. To address the issues faced by unemployed women, the government of Ethiopia is currently taking initiatives as part of its gender policy to improve the lives of this group.
The purpose of these initiatives is to contribute to the national response project and social protection policy of Ethiopia by tackling the aforementioned problems through improving the economic, capacity, and social reintegration of young jobless women, including returnees from the Gulf states, by providing basic, social, and livelihood improvement services.
