Vulnerable Children, Adolescents & Youth

Problems for project intervention:
The rapid growth in urban centers in Ethiopia has led to common manifestations of poverty and vulnerability for both young men and women. These include food insecurity, inadequate housing and sanitation, limited access to essential services such as health care, education, and financial resources, as well as exposure to harmful practices. Additionally, youth face challenges related to unemployment, unstable income, street life, limited knowledge about reproductive health, and the risk of addiction to substances like alcohol and chat. All of these factors contribute to a cycle of poverty and social crisis. Girls, in particular, experience additional obstacles such as restricted access to education, early and unwanted marriages, absence of parental support, exposure to unsafe and exploitative work, and coercive sexual relationships.

Project Objective: The project aims to create an enabling environment for young people to realize their potential, access information and education, and receive guidance to shape their future. By establishing safe and youth-friendly spaces, with a focus on adolescents and youth from slum dwellings and impoverished female-headed households, we can significantly impact their future prospects.

Specific Objectives:

  • The project aims to provide alternative job opportunities, access to recreation, and education for 250 youths per year by offering skill training in musical instruments, theatrical art, vocal performance, traditional and modern dance.

  • During the project period, the target groups will undergo training to enhance their life skills. This includes sessions on self-esteem, critical and creative thinking, maintaining a positive attitude, communication skills, social relations, conflict and anger management, coping with stress, managing emotions, substance abuse prevention, and reproductive health and STD prevention.

  • Furthermore, the project seeks to create employment opportunities for out-of-school and unemployed youths and connect them with potential employers.
